Rogan Art
Nirona, Kutch, Gujarat · Western India

What It Is
Rogan art is an extremely rare textile painting technique from Gujarat where thick, brightly colored paint made from castor oil is applied to fabric using a metal stylus. The paint is never touched by brush — it flows directly from the stylus, creating intricate, symmetrical patterns with a distinctive raised texture.

History & Origin
Rogan art was brought to India from Persia over 400 years ago. By the 1980s, the tradition was nearly extinct, practiced by only one family in the village of Nirona in Kutch. The Khatri family has single-handedly kept this rare art form alive, gaining international recognition when President Obama received a Rogan painting as a gift.
Cultural Significance
Rogan paintings traditionally featured motifs from nature — the Tree of Life, peacocks, flowers, and paisleys. The art was used to decorate wedding shawls and ceremonial textiles. The symmetrical designs are created using a unique folding technique where wet paint is transferred by pressing the fabric.
Technique
The paint is made by heating castor oil for 12 hours until it thickens into a paste, then mixing it with natural pigments. The artist dips a metal stylus into the paint and draws directly onto fabric without touching it. For symmetrical designs, the fabric is folded while the paint is still wet, creating mirror images.

Cultural Context
Rogan art represents one of the rarest textile traditions in the world, practiced by a single family in Gujarat. The technique requires years of training and absolute precision — there is no room for error, as the paint cannot be erased or corrected once applied.
