Phad
Bhilwara, Rajasthan · Western India

What It Is
Phad is a traditional narrative scroll painting from Rajasthan that depicts the heroic deeds of local folk deities, particularly Pabuji and Devnarayan. These large cloth scrolls serve as portable temples and visual storytelling devices, traditionally used by traveling bards who sing the epic tales while unrolling the painted narrative.
Emotional Qualities
History & Origin
The Phad tradition dates back over 700 years to the 13th century. The Joshi family of Bhilwara has been the hereditary custodian of this art form for generations. Phad paintings were traditionally commissioned by the Rabari community to honor their patron deity Pabuji.
Cultural Significance
A Phad scroll is not merely a painting — it is a sacred object. Before the first performance, the scroll undergoes a consecration ceremony. The Bhopa (priest-performer) and Bhopi (his wife) travel from village to village, unrolling the Phad and narrating the epic tales through song and dance.
Technique
Phad paintings are created on hand-woven cotton cloth treated with starch and Fuller's earth. Natural vegetable and mineral colors are used — yellow from turmeric, red from sindoor, green from leaves, and black from lampblack. The composition is divided into multiple panels depicting sequential narrative scenes.

Cultural Context
Phad painting is inseparable from the oral epic tradition of Rajasthan. The scroll serves as both visual aid and sacred icon during performances that can last all night. This living tradition connects rural communities to their folk heroes and cultural identity.
