Puri & Raghurajpur, Odisha · Eastern India

What It Is
Pattachitra, meaning 'cloth picture' (patta = cloth, chitra = picture), is a traditional scroll painting from Odisha known for its intricate detailing, bold outlines, decorative borders, and mythological narratives. These paintings are deeply connected to the Jagannath temple tradition of Puri.

History & Origin
Pattachitra has been practiced for over 1,000 years, with origins traced to the 12th century when artists created paintings for the Jagannath Temple in Puri. The tradition was passed down through generations of Chitrakara families who served as temple artists.
Cultural Significance
Pattachitra paintings primarily depict stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the life of Lord Krishna. The iconic image of Lord Jagannath with large, expressive eyes is central to this tradition. Every element carries symbolic meaning — the lotus represents purity, the conch shell divine sound.
Technique
The canvas is prepared by coating cloth with a mixture of chalk and tamarind seed paste, then polished with stones to create a smooth surface. Artists use fine brushes made from mouse hair to create intricate details. Natural colors are derived from minerals and plants, and the paintings are finished with a coating of lacquer for protection and shine.

Cultural Context
Pattachitra is inseparable from the Jagannath cult of Odisha. During the Rath Yatra festival, when the deities are taken for ritual bathing, Pattachitra paintings serve as substitute images for worship. The art form represents the living continuity of temple traditions spanning a millennium.
