History & Origin

Kerala murals trace their origins to the 7th-8th centuries CE, with the earliest examples found in rock-cut caves. The art form reached its zenith between the 15th and 19th centuries under the patronage of Kerala's royal families and temple authorities. The murals of Mattancherry Palace and Padmanabhapuram Palace are masterpieces of this tradition.

Cultural Significance

Kerala murals primarily depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas, with a special emphasis on Krishna Leela. The distinctive feature is the use of five primary colors (panchavarna) — red, yellow, green, black, and white. The figures are characterized by elongated eyes, broad shoulders, and graceful poses.

Technique

The wall is prepared with a mixture of lime, sand, and herbal extracts. The preliminary sketch is done in red ochre, followed by bold black outlines. Colors are applied in flat areas without shading. The distinctive 'Kerala style' features include the three-quarter profile view, elaborate ornaments, and decorative borders.
